Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge
The refuge contains 30 warm springs and seeps that follow a geological fault. Wetlands abound in this oasis with reservoirs, creeks lined with vegetation hills that surround this diverse desert location.
Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is located in Nye County on the Nevada-California border. Located 90 miles from Las Vegas, go through Pahrump and follow Hwy 160 to Bel Vista Road.
Natural warm springs and stops include Crystal Reservoir, Point of Rocks, King Spring and Devole's Hole, a detached portion of Death Valley National Park.
As Meadows was the former site of extensive agriculture plus a brothel in its time. The ranch was preserved and became the core of a new 22,000 acre refuge in 1984 under the management act of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The refuge is a no fee area closes at dusk. There is a ranger station, picnic tables, restrooms, information panels and the beginning of a boardwalk trail to Crystal Spring, a warm spring that boils up from under a ledge to form a warm pool and a shallow running stream.
Eagles are part of the experience at Crystal Reservoir with its abundance of waterfowl that winter. Ducks, geese and shorline waders such as egrets and herons.
